SWM was founded in Milan in 1971 by Italian motorsport enthusiasts Piero Sironi and Fausto Vergani. The company focused on motorcycle manufacturing, primarily producing off-road motorcycles for enduro and motocross riders.
In 2014, Chinese industrial group Shineray acquired the company and began developing passenger cars under the SWM brand alongside motorcycles. The SWM car range consists of stylish Italian-designed urban SUVs.

In 1983, the company launched a joint venture with American Motors Corporation (the parent company of the JEEP brand), establishing the first vehicle production joint venture in China's auto industry — Beijing Jeep Corporation.
It also established the first vehicle production joint venture with Hyundai Korea after China joined the WTO — Beijing Hyundai Auto Co., Ltd. — and founded Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd. together with Mercedes-Benz.

The history of Beijing Automobile Works (BAW) began in 1953. In 1965 it launched the legendary BJ212 off-roader, of which — together with its successors — over 2.4 million units have been built, first for the Chinese military and later for civilian use as well.
Today BAW is an independent manufacturer focused on rugged off-road vehicles. In 2024 the iconic “212” was revived as a standalone off-road brand, topped by the fully redesigned 212 T01. BAW vehicles are built for where the roads end.

ARCFOX was established in 2017 under BAIC BluePark as a premium electric-vehicle brand. Its cars are built in cooperation with the Austrian-Canadian technology group Magna, ensuring high build quality.
In 2021 ARCFOX partnered with Huawei, bringing Huawei's full-stack smart-car solution to the αS HI model. The brand's range consists of sporty electric crossovers — the αT and αS — combining long range with intelligent technology.
